How to increase productivity

“I wish I wasn’t so productive”, said no one ever! I literally don’t think there is anyone on this planet who wouldn’t benefit from a little more productivity, so they can get things done. Life gets so busy and especially if you’re juggling work, exercise, passion projects, relationships and anything else you need to squeeze into a day, it’s really important to make sure that you are making the most of your time and energy, so you can focus on what is really important.

So, what small steps can you take to be more productive, without sacrificing anything or creating more time in a day? Check out these 5 tips that will help you increase your productivity:

Have a plan: Sounds ridiculously simple, I know, but when I look at my ‘to-do list’ which indicates everything I need to do, I literally don’t know where to start. I proceed by starting one job then, starting another one, and by the end of the day everything is 5% done and I’ve completed nothing at all. Meaning the next day I have 10 unfinished jobs to do. Feel my pain? I thought so! From now on, try to plan out your entire week, and instead of completing a list of jobs, fill the gaps in your diary specifically with what tasks you’re going to complete at each time, this will ensure that a) you have the time to complete everything on your list for the week and b) you aren’t spending lots of time wondering what to do when.

Start with the biggest task: I don’t really know much about the ins and outs of the human brain and how we function. But I do know that when we complete the largest or toughest task we have to do first, every other thing on our list seems like a breeze! Have you ever left something that is going to take you a good few hours until a Friday afternoon knowing you’ll be exhausted from a full week at work? That’s not productive! Set yourself the toughest tasks when you know you have more energy to work through it. Get it done early, then you know that the rest of your list won’t be so tough to carry out.

Know yourself: Ever seen me update a blog post after 10pm? No? Yeah that figures, because past about 08:30pm I’m just not productive. I work really well in the morning, or just after work, and so I plan to do my jobs around then. Knowing yourself is so important when it comes to increasing your levels of productivity. It’s worth asking yourself, “when do I work best?” “When do I have more energy?,” and “When do I feel inspired and creative?” It makes no sense to start reading that book at 6:00am when you know you struggle to concentrate in the mornings. Know yourself and tailor your tasks to how you feel throughout the day.

Stop Multitasking: Yes, that’s right. Every time you’ve been told that multitasking is a skill that’s hugely desirable, it seems to be everybody’s way of getting things done. Cooking, whilst reading, whilst texting whilst anything else you feel you can squeeze into the space of 5 minutes. When it comes to our productivity you will probably find that you’ll do so much more if you focus on one task at a time, and really concentrate on doing it well. Finishing one job before moving onto the next means that not only can you check things off your ‘to-do’ list quicker, but you can also ensure that everything you do is of real high quality and done to the best of your ability. So next time you pull out your passion project, put your phone away and really be present with the task at hand.

Reward yourself: Lastly, it’s important to make sure you’ve got some real balance in life and that you’re playing as hard as you’re working! Set yourself little incentives so that you feel more motivated to do what you want to do. Maybe if you complete 5 gym classes in a week you could treat yourself to that new dress? Or maybe if you finish your personal growth course by a certain time you could arrange a spa day over the weekend? Treating yourself well especially when you’re being super productive will keep you fresh, energised and ready for the tasks you need to complete each week!
